Paid Advertising – Pay Per Click (PPC)

Pay Per Click advertising with Adwords or Bing Ads and even a number of the larger social networks can offer your business laser targeted and immediate traffic.

People don’t tend to watch TV commercials so much these days as when the adverts come on the first thing they tend to do is reach for their phone or tablet and start searching online – that’s where their attention is these days and why you need to found when they are searching online!

How Does PPC Advertising Work?

PPC advertising enables you to show above or at the side of the organic results, and is one of the fastest ways for you to get your website found in the search engines.

You bid on the keywords you want to laser target and you enter into an auction for your ads to be displayed in the search engines once they have been approved.

Something worth noting, which isn’t immediately obvious if your new to Adwords is that bidding more than your competitors doesn’t guarantee your ads will be displayed higher in search results though.

Google uses a metric they call quality score. Your quality score is determined by a number of different factors, some of the most important are the relevance of your add pertaining to the content on your website, mix this with the keywords you are targeting and you have a complex relativity metric.

Then there is the performance of the ads themselves, this means that better performing ads can pay less.

Google and the other PPC networks don’t want to display ads that no one ever clicks on, even if those people are bidding significantly higher than a well performing ad as they would simply make no money if the ads aren’t clicked.

Text Ads

You only pay for visitors to your site with text ads,  if a user searches and sees your text advert but doesn’t click on it you don’t have to pay. PPC advertising can be simple and very immediate but it can also be very expensive and complicated if you don’t know what you are doing.

Display Ads

There are also other types of ppc advertising like display advertising where you can have an image or banner displayed on other peoples websites within the Google Display Network (GDN), you can also re-target visitors that have been on your website before by creating audiences and the use of cookies.

Product Listing Ads (PLA’s)

There are also Product Listing Ads (PLA’s) you have probably seen these before when searching for a product on Google, they are usually images of products displayed in the top right of the page.

Google’s version is called Google Shopping and these ads can be set up in the Google Merchant Centre and connected to your adwords account. These ads are one of the most effective types of advertising for selling products on eCommerce websites
